Google's AI Overviews Just Got Bigger (and Your Clicks Got Smaller)

Google is pushing AI answers front and center. Here's what it means for your business and what to do about it.

Google just ate your search results. Last week's update lets AI Overviews expand to fill the whole screen on certain searches. No "show more" button needed. Just a full AI answer sitting where your website used to be.

This isn't theoretical. It's happening now, and if people get their answer without clicking anything, that's a customer you never see.

Fewer clicks up top means fewer customers through the door

Search for emergency plumber near me or tax prep in my area, and Google used to hand you a snippet up top, then the real results underneath. You could rank third or fifth and still get the click. Now Google might answer the whole question before anyone scrolls. Your business isn't even on the page unless someone goes looking for it on purpose.

Google calls this better for users. Maybe it is, for the person Googling everything under the sun. It's not better for the business that used to live in that scroll.

Nobody's said how many searches this hits yet. Bet on the high traffic ones. The searches people run when they're already reaching for their wallet.

What you can't control, you work around

You can't stop Google from showing AI Overviews. You can make sure you're standing somewhere else when the search happens.

Local search carries more weight now. Google Maps sits outside the AI answer, untouched by it. Someone looking for coffee near them usually taps Maps first, not the AI summary. Get your listing right: sharp photos, current hours, a pin that actually points at your door.

Ads are the one lane AI doesn't take. When organic room shrinks, the paid spot at the top gets more valuable, not less. If you're not running ads there, the business next to you is picking up the customers you just lost.

Your own audience is the strongest ground you own. People who type your name directly, open your email, or come back because they remember you skip Google's answer box completely. That's why a list of real customers who know your name matters more every month this keeps expanding.

Find out if this is already hitting you

Some searches are affected, some aren't. Some businesses are exposed, some aren't close.

Zak built a free check that shows where your traffic actually comes from: Google Search, Maps, and direct. Run it and see where the gap is before you guess.

If it turns out you're exposed and want your local presence handled, that's what Handle My Visibility ($197/month) is for. It keeps your listing, your photos, and your hours dialed in so Google can't quietly erase you.

Start with the free check. Let it tell you where you stand.
